The Dutch women have set their eyes on hockey gold
LONDON, England ● The men’s Swimming 10km Marathon and the women’s Hockey final are just two highlights of another action-packed day on which 17 gold medals will be won.
Medals are on offer in nine different sports on Friday and big crowds are once again expected to flock to venues in the Olympic Park and beyond to watch the drama unfold.
Another huge turnout is expected at Hyde Park to watch the men’s 10km Marathon, with Germany’s Thomas Lurz, Oussama Mellouli of Tunisia and Greece’s Spyridon Gianniotis among the leading contenders to win gold in the Serpentine.
The Netherlands and Argentina go for gold in the women’s Hockey final, with the Dutch team defending their title and Argentina going for a golden treble, as they hold the world and Champions Trophy crowns.
New Zealand and Great Britain will contest the bronze medal match in the afternoon.
Six gold medals will be up for grabs on the penultimate evening of Athletics in the Olympic Stadium.
The women’s 1500m promises to be one of the highlights of the evening, while Tirunesh Dibaba will be out to complete a famous long-distance double by adding the 5000m title to the 10,000m gold she has already won at London 2012.
The women’s 4 x 100m Relay final is expected to be a showdown between the USA and Jamaica, while the women’s Hammer Throw final also takes place on Day 14 of the Games.
Oscar Pistorius has a chance to add to his medal collection after South Africa were given a place in the men’s 4 x 400m Relay final on appeal.
The Bahamas and the USA were the fastest qualifiers after being given the same time of 2:58.87 in heat two, ahead of Trinidad and Tobago and Great Britain who were also given the same time of 3:00.38 in heat one.
The men’s Pole Vault final will also have the crowd on the edge of their seats in the Olympic Stadium.
The BMX Cycling has proved to be a popular event once again and the finals of the men’s and women’s competition will take place in the afternoon.
A lack of wind at Weymouth and Portland ensured there was no Sailing on Day 13, so the men’s 470 medal race will take place on Friday and the women’s 470 medal race will start later in the afternoon.
Great Britain’s world champion Sarah Stevenson will go for gold in the women’s -67kg Taekwondo at ExCeL, while medals are also up for grabs in the the men’s -80kg category.
There will also be Freestyle Wrestling medals to be won in the men’s 55kg and 74kg category at ExCeL.
At the Aquatics Centre, world champion Qiu Bo and Host Nation hopeful Tom Daley start the men’s 10m Platform Diving competition in the evening and the Synchronised Swimming Team final takes place in the afternoon.
