LONDON, England ● Tom Daley hit out at a Twitter troll following his near miss in the diving at the London 2012 Olympics with partner Pete Waterfield.
Daley and Waterfield were leading the 10m Synchronised event after three rounds, but a messy fourth dive – which Waterfield has apologised for – saw them miss out on a medal.
Daley’s focus will now turn to the individual event, but first he had to contend with a Twitter message which made reference to his father who died of cancer in 2011.
Shortly after the competition, Daley retweeted: “You let your dad down, I hope you know that.”
Daley responded by tweeting: “After giving it my all… You get idiots sending me this.”
The user later attempted to contact Daley to apologise, but the matter is now being looked at by the police.
“Regarding tweets to tomdaley1994 – we are aware of the issue and are actively looking into it,” a spokesperson for Dorset Police said.
Reflecting on their fourth dive, Waterfield said: “Fourth is the worst place to finish. I’d rather have finished last.
“I had a great start, I was spinning very well but I just kicked my feet too high and once you do that your over-rotate and you can’t stop it. There is no coming back.”
