MINSK, Belarus ● State television in Belarus says the head coach of the country’s Olympic track and field team has been arrested on suspicion of embezzlement.
Belarusian First Channel said that Anatoly Baduyev was arrested on suspicion of extorting bribes and embezzling sponsorship funds two months before the London Games.
Police and the Belarusian Athletics Federation declined to comment on the report.
Baduyev’s arrest follows a report in a local newspaper that said “a powerful man” in the athletics federation is willing “to stand for the athletes,” who have tested positive in doping tests.
The report in the sports weekly Pressball did not identify any officials by name.
